| The
Runic alphabets use letters known as runes, and were used to write
Germanic languages, mainly in Scandinavian countries and the British
Isles. Norse mythology attributes the invention of runes to Odin,
chief of all Norse gods and in particular, god of wisdom, war, magic,
poetry and prophecy. The earliest runic inscriptions are simple markings
on objects (e.g. coins, combs, etc.), showing the name of the craftsman
or the owner. The name “rune” means “secret, something hidden” and
casting the runes, rather like “drawing lots”, has been used as a
form of divination for centuries.
