Mountain Ash Miscreants
I heard it again. Yes, voices. Down below. I lied down on my belly and peered over the edge of the rock, and this time, I saw them. Three people, all Rowan Clan, all carrying hunting gear, and all, wearing death marks. Fortunately, I was directly above them, which helped me stay out of sight.
But what were the Rowan Clan doing this far north? And why were they wearing death marks? I concentrated on their leader. He was clearly a mage; he had the same “mage gear” as our Swan Clan mage. He stood proud, and the others clearly admired their leader, but he had an essence that made me uneasy. The other two were following him like he was the only other human on earth, and it was clear that, wherever they were heading, only he knew the way. Their leader took out a pouch, and pulled out bones. Bones? Then he mumbled something to his assistants and-
“Leiser!” I winced. I was originally supposed to be hunting with the rest of the group, but wandered off. Aldger, one of our best hunters, always tells me to “snap out of it” and that I should “join the real world one day”. I can’t help it that I’m curious. I looked over the edge one last time. They were gone.
I turned around to see Aldger standing there, hands on his hips, as usual. He looked towards the edge then looked at me and raised an eyebrow.
“What were you doing?” he asked.
“I uh, was just looking at the view.” I lied. Aldger was always butting into my business.
He rolled his eyes. “Will you join the real world one day instead of dreaming off in your own?” he said. “ Come on, we’ve already finished hunting.” He started back towards the clan. I followed, and with one last look, I tried to memorize everything I saw.
I soon as we got back, I ran to my best friend, Jastor, who was sharpening his knife by the flames. The rest of the Swan Clan was calm; most were helping prepare the catch, others were making clothes or harpoons, but it was peaceful, like the High Mountains always were.
“Rowan Clan huh?” he commented after I told him everything. “And you said there was a mage?”
I nodded. “And two others. What do you think they’re doing this far north?”
“Clan meet?” he asked.
“Nah, that’s in one moon. Besides, the whole clan would have gone with them.”
He leaned his face against his fist and thought. “ And the mage had-“
“Bones.”
“Human bones? Or animal bones?” he asked.
“ I don’t know, Aldger cut in when I was looking.” I answered.
“Aargh! Darn Aldger is always butting in.” he exclaimed.
I nodded my head in agreement. “Well, they’re obviously doing some sort of ritual. And it must be pretty powerful if they need death marks. But why north? Why do they need to go north? The only thing that’s in the direction they were heading is-“
“The Mountain of World Spirit!” Jastor shouted while jumping up, and nearly falling into the fire. “You said you got a bad vibe when you saw the Rowan Clan mage right?!
“Right…”
“Well what’s going to be in the sky soon!?”
“The Great Auroch!” I whispered loudly, as I didn’t want to be heard by Aldger, or disturb the rest of the clan. “They’re going to try to do something to the Mountain of World Spirit when the Great Auroch is highest!”
“Demons…” hissed Jastor. “ When do we leave?”
“What?” I responded.
“We’re going to stop them aren’t we? Now that we know, we can’t let them do this!” he lowered his voice to a whisper. ”We’ll sneak out at night, when no-one is around”
“What about Aldger? He never sleeps.” I asked.
Jastor developed a devilish smile and said “ Let’s just tie him up and leave him somewhere out of sight.”
I laughed. “All right, we leave at the crack of dawn.”
The next morning, I met Jastor at the remains of what used to be the fire. He was carrying his equipment, and only a small portion of rope. “Hey, I wasn’t kidding when I said I’d tie him up.”
I looked up at the sky. It was quiet, and still quite dark, but the Great Auroch was getting higher. Without another word we ran off, across the rocky slopes, trying to find three people determined to do something evil, on a mountain that no-one has seen before. Easy enough, I thought. As I ran with my companion beside me, I honestly didn’t know what we would do. But I was sure of one thing; wherever they went, whatever they were going to do…
We would put a stop to it.
