Wolf Guardian
“Hurry! Hurry! Be swift my kin be swift! Be careful Chaika this is rough ground don’t lose your footing!” commanded the Alfa female timber wolf known as Messina to the black and deep brown female called Chaika.
“Mistress Messina!” called a young male as he and another ran up to her and dipped their heads down in respect for their commander.
“Yes, what is it Rucktuk?” replied Messina to the one whom had called her with his silver and auburn fur glistening in the moonlight. She howled a sharp bark to the pack to tell them to slow their pace as her silver and gold fur billowed all around her in the frosty gusts of wind and snow.
“Mistress, the boy is slowing shall I give the order for him to be carried?” Rucktuk urgently replied.
“No, that won’t be necessary.” She turned to the black wolf. “Sockum, I want you to scout ahead for a place suitable to rest. If you see any sign of danger report back immediately. Understood?”
“Yes Mistress.” Replied Sockum and he headed further up the mountain. As the wind began to pick up even more snow was being hurled of the mountain and onto Sockum as he hurriedly searched for a shelter. Then he found a cliff facing the wind with great pines growing all about it. Yes, thought Sockum. This is the perfect place. I must hurry or the snow will be too deep to travel in. And so he set of again down the mountain side to his pack where his mistress was angrily growling at the sudden change of weather.
Messina was very angry at the weather indeed. If the Great Wolf Guardian is so impatient because he doesn’t have Looga yet why would he send all the wind and snow to slow us!
“Mistress?” a small gentle voice called faintly from behind Messina.
“Yes Chaika? What is it?” Messina asked with a quizzical look.
Chaika walked up beside Messina with her body low in reverence and submission then quietly answered, “Mistress, why must the Great One have Looga?” A deep look of sadness filled her blue/grey eyes as she continued, “Wouldn’t He be satisfied with one of the others more too adult hood? Looga is you and the packs only reminder of Regonnon Arrow, Dynnarrow.
Dynnarrow is Messina’s mate. He was swift and sure footed and could howl like no other. He was a born leader and all his qualities were passed on to including his rare dazzling sapphire blue and violet eyes to his and Messina’s only son Looga.
With a deep sigh Messina interrupted, “Oh Chaika, dear loving gentle one. You are indeed the perfect one to be the Keeper of the Pups, but you care too much! Please don’t remind us with the burden we must bear. Dynnarrow may not be back you know this.”
“But Mistress, he could come back! He promised he would!”
“Chaika!” Messina angrily growled. “Control yourself! I’m the Alfa remember your place!”
Chaika immediately realizing her mistake quickly backed away with her ears flat, tail tucked between her legs, and whimpering all the way back to the pups in the middle of the pack.
Sockum was just arriving from his run. Messina greeted him and howled for the pack to follow. Sockum led the pack to the resting spot near the path to the mountain peak.
Messina took Looga away from the pack into the evergreens where she had a deep conversation with him.
“Looga, do you know why you’re here?” Messina asked quietly. “Do you know why you’re a lone pup?”
“Yes mother, I’m destined to be the next guardian.”
“Why must you be a guardian? The Dynnolvish pack only gives a guardian pup every 868 winters so why you when the time for a new guardian has past us?”
“Because father was to be guardian but he escaped his fate. He ran and kept running until he met you. Then after 6 moons the guardian found him and he took of again into the deep forest.”
“Oh Looga,” Messina sobbed as she gazed at her son. “I can’t have you go! I won’t be able to bear having you leave me too!”
“Mother be strong. I will not be leaving you. Just wait and see.”
Messina regained her posture and led Looga back to the pack. In the morning she announced to the pack that the time was right and they would head up the path to the peak within thee hour.
As they scaled the path Messina and Looga wordlessly climbed, each deep in their thoughts. When they reached the top a brilliant blinding aurora filled with great beasts of the deceased and of those who were once guardians surrounded them bathing them in their beautiful colors of radiant light.
Then a great voice called out, “Looga, welcome to the Mountain of Souls.” Then a blazing red wolf stepped out onto the mountain and padded across to Looga and Messina with a bright blue glow all about him.
“I’m Ignipotens meaning the Fire Lord. We have long awaited your arrival.” He turned to Messina. “Noble Mother, I have very high hopes in your son that I know he will surpass. Be proud brave mother for the guardians hold you in our greatest respects.”
He turned to the aurora and looked back at Looga. “It is time to start your training young guardian.” He said with a smile of great joy. “Be swift and say your blessing upon your pack.”
Looga said his blessing and returned to his mother gazing at her with the most loving, saddened, and beautiful face Messina had ever seen. “I’ll always watch over you, father, and the pack but till I see you again mother, Guardian Speed!” And he took of into the aurora with Ignipotens to begin his new life as a guardian.
That's it! Please let it in! Thank you very very much!
