Viph And Ahkl

As the sun set and darkness began to loom over the forest, the children of an ancient clan gathered about a beautiful sea beach for a special story. The waved hit the land quietly as a large man bent down over a pile of sticks, children giggled as they sat in a circle about fire place. Several quick clicks echoed threw the area and suddenly small glowing sparks darted into the pile of wood. Quickly, the red hot sparks lit the small amount of dead bark which was set skillfully about the edge of the sticks.

As the man smiled and stood up, the children calmed and fell silent. The man turned about and began to walk away as another person walked toward the small fire. Both nodded a greeting to one another, before the man disappeared toward glowing spot of other fires in the distance. The other person, a short, elderly woman stopped in front of the fire and grinned. All the eyes of the curious children where upon her as the bright flames lit the woman’s face, showing her many wrinkles. Silence fell upon this small circle as the elderly woman raised her hand above her head, gripping a small substance in her hands.

“Tonight, my children, we learn of the great Clan Guardian!” The woman bellowed in an eerie voice. She suddenly waved her hand over the flames, creating a sudden eruption of fire. The flames roared high, sending smoke high into the blackening sky. The children gasped as they watched a small image of a bird drive upwards into the tunnel of black smoke, only to disappear into the sky.

“The great Clan Guardian is the protector of the Sea Eagle Clan. He uses this great eyes to watch over us, his great wings to fly. His murderous claws to kill prey and aid us in the hunt.” The woman said suddenly, and again all the attention of the children turned to her. “The one who helps us through sicknesses, the one who sends prey to us.” She added, her eyes studying each one of the children’s faces and their expressions.

“The Sea Eagle is watching you, children. If you are so brainless to disobey anyone, who knows what the mighty spirit will do.” She said, her eyes narrowing as she stepped back as the fire calmed again. “I will tell you the story of Viph and Ahkl. Viph was a promising young man, being strong in body and brave in heart. But was he lacked was intelligence. Viph was a wonderful hunt and an adventurous man, but foolish to think the Sea Eagle did not watch him.

“He was young, just like any of you. On this night, the children of his time gathered about a fire, much like this one. His mage told him and the others of the great Ahkl- the Sea Eagle guardian at the time. The mage told the children that Ahkl watched over each of them everyday, watching their every movement with his keen eyes. In awe, the children listened to the mage. Viph, being rather self-centered, rose and dared to interrupt his mage. ‘Bah- Ahkl is a child’s story. He is nothing but a stupid bird, what power does he have?’ The fool said with a sly grin. His mage gasped and quickly put out the fire with a kick of sand and vanished.

“In surprise, the other children growled at Viph, for he ruined their story night. Viph stood proud, not seeing what was wrong. He looked up into the sky and sat back on the beach as the other children left to go to their fa and ma.” The elderly woman grinned and continued. “But little did Viph know, Ahkl was watching him. The great Guardian dove down out of the sky and landed in front of the foolish child. ‘Viph! You have been a fool to stand against your mage, she was right. I am Ahkl.’ The eagle said with a beautiful voice. Surprised, Viph jumping back and shaked his head. ‘No! Ahkl was a child’s story! My mage knows nothing! You aren't Ahkl, liar!’ The child said.

“Ahkl shifted his wings and shook his head. ‘No, no. Your mage was quite correct, and she knows more than you will ever know.’ The Sea Eagle bellowed angerly, spreading his wings. ‘You foolish child- you have stood against your mage, against me!’ He added, flying into the sky. Twisting lights took the child into the heavens, making him into the moon as a horrible punishment. As they great lights did this, Ahkl watched bitterly.” The mage said, looking into the starry sky, pointing to the full moon. “Viph living in the sky, alone. No one to brag to, no one to talk to. The stars are other child like him. And if you are not careful, my children, our Guardian will come for you.” Said the elder sternly.

The children exchanged glances as they gasped at the story. Was it true? Was Viph really turned into the moon? Of course. High above the circle of children, a beautiful bird circled the heavens, watching them. Upon his beak was some kind of smile, a grin. Oh, yes. The moon was Viph and the stars other like him. The great Sea Eagle flapped his mighty wings, looking from the children to the sea. The Eagle parted it’s beak and let out a loud screech, which echoed down to the children as they made their way back to the camp.

They all gasped in horror, then ran back to the camp as fast as they could. The mage, who walked behind them, only laughed.
