In the beginning, the Nanuak, the world soul called upon the animals of the forest, seas, snowcaps and deserts. It was aware of the presence of newcomers, human beings.
They gathered there at the Mountain of the World Spirit as the Nanuak has commanded. They formed a circle so large that they went all around the mountain, joined to each other by paws or tails. With the eagles, swans and all other birds flying in circular paths around the upper-tip, silence fell. Through the circle, the symbol of the Nanuak, it would speak to them.
The mighty rock rumbled and slowly, as if hypnotised by the sound of the mountain, certain animals moved forward slowly climbing the jagged edge of the mountain. Chosen birds swooped to join the animals making their slow ascent.
Soon, one of each type of animal was assembled on the cliff, still standing in a circle. The Nanuak spoke into their minds.
‘The new ones are coming. They will be here soon. You must guide them, they know not of the evils in your parts. As each group chooses a place to settle, you shall be their guardians. Where a group is closest to your herd, you shall look over this group protect them and keep each member safe. They shall look to you in times of trouble and praise you when times are good. They shall be your Clan and will name themselves after you. Look after them well, each and every one of them. Now go and greet your new ones and treat them as though they were your children.’
And so, the Clan Guardians left, leading there packs back to where they came from, the wolves to the forest, the eagles to the tree-tops, the arctic foxes to the polar caps and the vipers to the deserts.
As the Nanuak predicted the new ones came and settled in different areas. They greeted the newcomers and told them of evils known to them. Over time they developed their own language, not using the one of their guardians. But they remembered their Guardians in other ways. As the world soul had said, the Guardians protected the humans, and raised them as if they were their own. And so, the Clan Guardians were born.
