Monthly Art Competition - First Theme!

Welcome to what will be the first of many monthly Clan art competitions! See that banner at the top of the page, that changes to show news of the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness? How would you like it if every time you logged onto The Clan a piece of your artwork was one of the images to come up?

As you may have seen on the front page or in the other thread in the Clan Art forum we're giving Clanners the chance to have their art immortalized for a month on The Clan's news fader.

There have been a number of changes to this event since I announced it the other day.

Firstly, along with the art contest there will also be a writing competition where the winning piece will be on display on the front page of the Clan. Like with the art, there will be a set theme related to CoAD which the entries must be linked with. This will take place on alternate months with the art competition (ie. The first month will be art, the second writing, the third art, etc). The writing will be limited to short stories and poetry only, as the Guardians also need time to read through the entries and judge them.

The second change is the timing of the competition. The first of these events will start on the 27th of July and the closing date will be the 26th of August. The Nanuak, the other Guardians and myself will then judge the entries for the winner to be announced on the 1st of September. The winner’s picture will be displayed in the banner until the next winner has been announced.

EDIT: The new subforum has been opened. To enter you must submit your artwork into that forum.

Alternatively,although it's preferred if you'd submit it onto the forum, if you'd rather post it, you can send your entry to the following postal address:

If you do send it by snail mail, Nanuak will scan them in and submit them into the subforum.


The competition is open to anyone who wants to enter and any type of art will do (digital, traditional, photography, etc.).

TORAK


To help with the art competition it’s best to read the descriptions of Torak in the books. I saw a post by Renak not long ago which I think will be very useful for those who want to enter.

SE= Soul-Eater
O= Outcast

Age: 12 (WB), 12 but turns 13 (SW), 13 (SE), 13 but turns 14 (O)
Companions: Wolf (gray wolf)
Family: Father (beginning of WB), none (Raven and Seal Clan/ SW), none (Raven Clan/ SE), none (just Renn/ O)
Hair: Black, bangs on forehead, shoulder-length (WB), a little longer than shoulder-length (SW), fairly long (beginning of SE), shorter than shoulder length (near end of SE), shoulder length again (O)
Eyes: Pale Gray
Clothes: Sleeveless buckskin clothes (beginning of WB), buckskin parka (end of WB), sleeveless buckskin clothes again (beginning of SW), sleeveless gray seal clothes (middle of SW), seal stuff+gutskin parka (end of SW), buckskin and reindeer parkas (SE), buckskin clothes again (O)
Accessories: None I think...
Weapons: Fa's knife, bow+arrows, Fin-Kedinn's knife, black basalt axe

Alignment: Light, but a little dark side (I know why he's a spirit walker in the first place, and it was no accident)
Scars: Small one in between the third set of clan tattoos on the left side of his face


I understand that a number of people at the Clan find drawing people hard but do not let this month’s theme put you off, because the next competition you might find easy. Even if you don’t think you can draw people give it a go anyway, the only way you’ll improve is by practicing.

With that said, good luck and remember that you have until the 26th of August to produce your pictures.

I also forgot to mention that he has the mark of the Soul-Eater on his breast bone and a long scar running down the side of his left calf.

I just have 1 question; can you draw more than one pic? I've got several good pics and several great ideas, but I can't decide. If I can, do I have to put all of them on one thread? Or do I have to post a new thread everytime? I guess I'm gonna have to go to a friend's house to scan them, though.

Sure Renak, if you've got more than one pic then that's fine. It will be fine if you put them all in one thread, but it would be easier for us as the judges if you make sure that they're all at the start of the thread incase people started commenting on the art - we don't want to have to spend hours looking through threads!

Ahimsan - You can either post a thread in this subforum with your entry in, or if you don't have access to a scanner/camera you can send them to this address:

If you send it to the address someone will scan it for you and post it up here as well.

If you do have access to a scanner please just put it on the Clan as it's much easier for everyone.

WolfGirlNina, if you win this competition then yes you will be able to take part in the other competitions. Obviously the Guardians will try to make sure it isn't the same person winning every time but I see no reason why you shouldn't enter all of them.

And yes, next month will be a writing competition, but it'll work in the same way.

Yeah I kinda need to know what size it has to be as I think I'm going to have to crop mine down as I doubt it will fit at the top of the page if I was by some miracle to win...

Ok, here we go...

Yes, next months competition will work in pretty much exactly the same way as this months with the exception that the winning piece will be displayed on the front page and not in the banner because it would make it hard to read. There will be a set theme and you can either write a poem or a short story (the number of words is yet to be decided). The theme will be announced on the same day that the winner of this competition is declared.

It can just be the head and shoulders if you like - we can't tell you exactly what to do because you've got to have some artistic freedom.

As for fitting it in the banner it would probably be best if you didn't crop it down. I'm not entirely certain how it's going to work but say you did you picture portrait, we'll fit it in as much as we can and pick the best bit or the part most recognizable as Torak. Please don't hold me to this though because I don't know if Nanuak had a different plan.

For the writing competition....you said there will be a certain number of words. Is that a minimum number, or can it be no longer than that set number?

does this compition accept contemporary or abstract art?

Any sort of artwork can will be accepted for the competition, although I doubt you'll win if you do an abstract picture of Torak. But perhaps for some of the future themes an abstract picture might be interesting.
