EmailA double transatlantic whammy this weekend for COAD. On Saturday, The Times (London) carried a major feature in the Books section looking for a successor to the Harry Potter mantle: Michelle was one of six authors short-listed!
And across the pond, the New York Times carried “one of the most brilliant and perceptive reviews I’ve ever read” according to Michelle’s agent. Book three in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness – Soul Eater – has just been published in the States and the review can’t find enough good things to say – here are some brief extracts:
- “Hugely entertaining series”
- “Generates tremendous suspense”
- “Paced like summer blockbusters, the novels open with a bang and pick up speed from there…”
- “The books are page turners, and “Soul Eater” is perhaps the most thrilling…”
- “Readers will find that Torak and his companions could go a long way toward filling that Potter-size hole in their lives.”

EmailIn a new study published today by the ROYAL SOCIETY it is claimed that 500 wolves could be introduced back into the Scottish Highlands, after a 240 year absence, to solve an emerging ecological crisis caused by soaring deer numbers.
The estimated half a million deer are threatening plant and bird life and making reforestation problematic. The biggest obstacle to this however, is negative public perception of the creatures. Wolves have a big PR problem. Alan Watson Featherstone, Executive Director of the Trees for Life charity, says, “The wolf probably has the worst public image of any large animal on the planet, fed by children’s fairy tale stories like The Three Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood.”
One children’s writer trying to redress the balance is Michelle Paver, whose series The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, set in the Stone Age, tells the story of a young orphaned boy, Torak, and his friendship with a wolf cub. Michelle, who is also a patron of the UK Wolf Conservation Trust, based in Berkshire, was thrilled when the trust named their newly adopted wolf cub Torak, after the hero of her books. Michelle has spoken to thousands of children, in schools and at literary festivals in the UK and abroad, dispelling myths about wolves. She talks about her first-hand experiences with the creatures, and even teaches the children some “wolf talk”!
Michelle Paver’s Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series is published in 37 countries worldwide. The books have sold over half a million copies in the UK alone. Ridley Scott has bought the film rights to the series. he Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series was launched with WOLF BROTHER in 2004, and followed by SPIRIT WALKER in 2005, SOUL EATER in 2006. The eagerly anticipated fourth title in the series, OUTCAST will be published in September this year.

I just want to say a huge (and very late) HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my readers - and a big thank-you for all your letters, cards, emails and postings on torak.info! As many of you may know, I don't have access to the Internet at home, so I've been thinking that maybe I'd better tell you why. It's not just that I spend most of my waking hours in the Stone Age with Torak and Renn and Wolf - although I do, and long may that continue. The real reason is that if I did have access to torak.info at home, I'd get addicted to it, and I'd be continually logging on to see what you're all saying, so I'd never get any writing done!
However, I do drop in from time to time to see what's going on, and of course, I've met lots of you at book signings, book festivals, and at the launch of Soul Eater last year. It's one of the most encouraging things for a writer to meet their readers, and I love it.
It's been a hugely busy time for me over the end of Christmas and the New Year, as I've been finishing OUTCAST (ie Book Four). Well, when I say finishing, it's pretty much done, and I'm enormously pleased with it - but there's still quite a lot of tweaking to do, and the artists have to do the cover and maps and illustrations, and so on - which is why it'll be published in about early September 07. (Although if you can't wait that long, you'll be able to read Chapter One at the back of the paperback version of SOUL EATER, which comes out in the UK some time in June.)
Why is it called OUTCAST? I'm not telling, of course, although those of you who have read SOUL EATER may well be able to guess. In OUTCAST, Torak is on his own - I mean, really on his own, split up from Renn and for a time, even from Wolf. And there are some pretty huge revelations about both Torak and Renn... But I'd better not say any more.
Anyway, that's all for now, as I've got to go and do some more work on OUTCAST. Once again, Happy New Year...
... and may the guardian run with you!

EmailJust to say that Michelle’s mailbox has now CLOSED (see below) so please don’t send any further e-mail messages to that address – they will simply bounce back to you and not be received or read. As you may know, Michelle does not have internet access, and therefore does not have regular access to e-mail. Setting up a temporary mailbox for her here was an experiment that has proved SO SUCCESSFUL that we will DEFINITELY DO IT AGAIN – so if you didn’t manage to get your questions in this time, don’t despair – there will be another opportunity!
