"Recently, I was privileged to be in the studio for three days, watching Ian McKellen record the audiobook of OUTCAST. (And in case you don't yet know, this was postponed from last year, as Ian had an extremely full schedule, with two highly acclaimed theatrical productions of KING LEAR and THE SEAGULL)

Actually, maybe I should have said "perform" instead of simply "record", because one of the great treats of witnessing Ian read these books is to see how he totally inhabits every character - and indeed Torak's whole world - as he moves through the story. He can veer from touching to spooky to exciting to downright terrifying in a heartbeat. No wonder watching him is one of the highlights of my year!

A review of the SPIRIT WALKER audiobook in The Independent newspaper once called Ian "an enchanter", and I can tell you that that is absolutely right. One moment he's Wolf - and I mean, he really IS Wolf, exactly as I hear Wolf's words in my head when I'm writing them; the next moment, he's Rip, or Rek, or Fin-Kedinn, or the Forest. It's like sitting around the campfire, listening to your clan Mage telling a story, and feeling yourself betwitched by that amazing voice. 

Indeed, as I sat in the darkened studio, I found myself thinking about just how powerful a voice can be when its own owner truly knows how to use it. Which gave me all sorts of ideas for GHOST HUNTER...

But enough of that. To all the many readers who have written to me saying how much they've enjoyed the CHRONICLES OF ANCIENT DARKNESS audiobooks, I can tell you that the OUTCAST audiobook should be available by the summer (I'll post the exact date when I know it) - and I can assure you, it will have been worth the wait.
